Dr. Sheila D. Williams®, Ph.D., has been dubbed ‘The Voice’, for her natural ability to advocate for those whose voice is not often heard. Dr. Sheila is the CEO of SW Consulting Services, LLC, Mental Health Advocate, Best-Selling Author and Empowerment Speaker. She holds a BA in Psychology with a minor in Sociology, an MA in Mental Health Counseling, and a Ph.D. in Leadership and Education. After caring for her mother, who suffered from Clinical Depression, Dr. Sheila decided to pursue her education and career in the Mental Health field. With a love for counseling and education coupled with a passion to help others, she remained in the Social Service Industry for many years. She later saw the correlation between at-risk students and social/emotional disorders and decided to make the transition to higher education administration. By doing so, she has had a rewarding career in both the Mental Health and Education fields that spans over the course of 25 years. Dr. Sheila continues to serve as a catalyst for both mental health and educational reform and sees each day as an opportunity to touch someone’s life in a positive way.
Having dealt with the responsibility of caring for her mother and being told by her High School Guidance Counselor that college was ‘not for her’ and that she would not be successful; Dr. Sheila would not take NO for an answer, as she turned each 'challenge' into an opportunity to prove that ‘yes I can’! Dr. Sheila is so inspirational, she has a natural love for life and finds joy in helping others reach their fullest potential. She believes in taking adversity and turning it into an opportunity to propel oneself to the next level. Dr. Sheila is often encountered by those who simply cannot believe her story. With that, she decided to write her memoir, My Mother’s Keeper. Dr. Sheila gives you a very up close and personal look into her life, the mystery, the challenges and the truth behind what motivated her to persevere and accomplish all of the things she has set out to do; and she’s just beginning. She has decided to be completely transparent about her life’s journey to inspire, uplift and motivate everyone she meets. Through her dedication to assist others, her advanced education and expertise in the field, and her personal journey of being raised by a mother who suffered from mental illness, Dr. Sheila serves as an expert in her field. Her message, her life, and her legacy continue to be of inspiration to everyone she meets.

She was the one who gave birth to her, became her first friend and encouraged her to try school that scary kindergarten year, which led her to a lifelong love of education. Yet where TV and radio personality Dr. Sheila learned most from her mother was during her mother’s battle with clinical depression and later diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. Her critically-acclaimed memoir, “My Mother’s Keeper,” chronicles Dr. Sheila’s sometimes dysfunctional but endearing friendship with her mother, which endured a parental role reversal when her mother’s mental health issues forced Sheila to be responsible for herself at age ten. Dr. Sheila later details her memories of still seeing the embodiment of the Proverbs 31 woman within her mom, as she later became her mother’s primary caregiver. “My Mother’s Keeper” is a moving tribute to the power of a mother-daughter bond that defied the odds, both externally and internally, and thrived in unshakeable love until the very end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Google Books Review By Mr. Michael M. MillerI must say what an amazing read! Honestly I’m not even much of a reader but I literally sat down and began to read these words and instantly I could visualize a movie playing in my mind!!I began to think about my mother me how much she means to me and how lucky I am to still have such a strong woman of character, discipline but most of all love in my life. In life we will always face some adversity but there is nothing in this world more comforting than a mothers touch and encouragement. I recommend this book to all the young men out there that are just trying to gain some insight of unconditional love to your spouse, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother or any woman in your life that deserves all the love in the word!! Must read fellas!

A must read!
This is a must read especially for African Americans. It touches on so many issues that are not spoken about in the black community, it address how mental illness is not addressed, the medical community not caring when a patient does not have medical insurance, the bond between mother and daughter, lack of community services when one is dealing with aging and sick parents but it also inspirational. It shows that with all of these life challenges one can still persevere.

Mental Health Advocacy
She remains active in her community and continues to work closely with the education system to bring mental health therapy to schools. Dr. Sheila also partners with the ACLU to evoke changes in legislation as it relates to Mental Health services for inmates and their families. By providing mental health services to inmates and their families, we truly work to ‘rehabilitate’ not only the ‘criminal mind’, but also address the social and emotional trauma that both the inmate and their families often face.

It’s rare that you come across standout talent like Dr. Sheila D. Williams. I met Dr. Williams on the set of her television show, The Dr. Sheila Show. She interviewed me for a segment entitled, “Overcoming Fears to Launch a New Business.” I left the filming of that episode thinking that I had just met the next Oprah Winfrey. Dr. Williams, who has a Masters in Mental Health and a Phd in Leadership, is both engaging and inspiring. She connects with her guests and her audience in ways not unlike Charlie Rose or Barbara Walters. Dr. Williams is a transformative, passionate and dedicated talk show host and entrepreneur who is committed to making a positive difference in the world. I fully expect to see her seated next to other national news and journalism professionals interviewing United States presidential candidates.

Dr. Williams is a talented author and inspiring speaker. It is rare to encounter someone who not only learns from adversity, but also uses it to help others heal and grow. She is that rare individual who is every bit as real in person as she is in her writing. If you have not had the opportunity to read her book or hear her speak, you are missing out!
